Historic Hillsborough Excursion Day
The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough is once again excited to host Historic Hillsborough Excursion Day on Saturday, June 24th, from 10 am until 4 pm!
For the second year in a row, the Alliance invites everyone to experience Hillsborough, a small town with big history, through a day of FREE activities at the local historic sites.
“Although Hillsborough is a small town, we have a broad range of history to experience,” said Annie Newton, Program and Development Director for the Alliance. “People are surprised when they get here and realize it’s more than just a town founded in the 1700s. You can experience all centuries of heritage and culture.” Newton is excited to expand the event’s footprint by adding more activities, free tours, and venues this June. “This year, more sites are participating, allowing us to share more of Hillsborough’s rich history.”
Self-guided tours will be available throughout Hillsborough’s most favored landmark sites, including the Ayr Mount house, Dickson house and farm office, Burwell School Historic Site, St. Matthew’s Church grounds, and the Occaneechi Replica Village. Activities range from family-friendly brickmaking demonstrations at Ayr Mount to the firing presentations by the Welsh Fusiliers.
The Burwell School will provide a special docent-led tour of the Burwell schoolhouse in the afternoon while the Orange County Historical Museum brings back its notorious Ghosts of Hillsborough event.
